Energotest

We have innovated this year by offering the opportunity to technology suppliers to participate in two different Energotest campaigns.

The first campaign was held in July 2010, and was dedicated to fuel consumption tests for specific duty cycles. The second campaign was held in August 2010, and ran fuel consumption tests following TMC-SAE Type II Test Procedure (SAE J1321) or TMC-SAE Type III Test Procedure (SAE J1526).

The first ever Energotest campaign was held in October 2007, at the Test and Research Centre of Transport Canada in Blainville (Québec). Since then, we have organized four Energotest campaigns, and tested about 50 technologies.

The objective of the Energotest project is to conduct controlled test-track studies of solutions for achieving higher fuel efficiency and lower emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG) in the trucking industry. Energotest not only allows fleets to choose the most efficient solutions, but also allows technology suppliers to redirect their development efforts.

The test procedure is based on the SAE J1321 Joint TMC/SAE Fuel Consumption Test Procedure - Type II (SAE International, 1986). The fuel-consumption test compares the fuel consumption of a test vehicle, operating under two conditions, with that of an unmodified control vehicle.

Fuel consumption is accurately measured by weighing temporary tanks before and after each trip. The repeatability of the scale measurements is periodically checked during the tests using a set calibration weight.
